Each day as students arrive after they've finished their morning jobs, they write in their Writing Journals. We have pre-taught the expectations of second grade satisfactory work. Students write the date, greeting, their journal entry and the closing.
Daily I check their entries and each night I check one group's Writing Journals responding to their journal entries. For some students, it's not difficult to come up with a writing topic whether it's things they are doing at home, with relatives, preparing for special events, extra curricular activities and/or school events. Others have a difficult time coming up with topics, therefore, I read aloud and have two QR Code prompts available for each day.
We work specifically on our manuscript/print handwriting skills each week in our Handwriting Without Tears handwriting booklets reviewing what they've been taught in previous grades. We make it fun by doing different hand/body exercises to review the various strokes/formations of each letter too.
Please take time to have your child write notes back and forth to you, start a journal at home, make lists, etc. to encourage them to get more writing experiences. Some students have excellent penmanship, others need to take their time with a sharp pencil and they will see success too! Thank you for supporting them at home!
